THL 5000 review. (Unparalleled battery life, amazing specs and features at stunning cheap price)

Its undeniable that the most sought after feature in smart phones in recent times is battery life. Strange huh? Unfortunately, that feature is one which is difficult to incorporate into new devices as most companies go after sleek looks for their devices aiming to make them slimmer, lighter and more visually appealing. This feat is often achieved as devices these days, come in very slim light form factors but often at the expense of battery life, which power users like me aren't too happy about. I want to be able to play The Walking Dead on my phone for hours, then listen to spotify while chatting on BBM and blogging on the side without worrying about my battery dying on me.

This led me on a hunt for a device that would pack enough processing grunt to power through my HD games, have a gorgeous 1080p HD display, have a large enough battery to sustain it for at least 24hrs without charging, and still maintain the standard size, weight and dimensions of normal smartphones. I stumbled into something very interesting and yes you guessed right. Its the THL 5000. The device comes with a Turbo Octacore processor clocked at 2.0GHZ with 2GB Ram and a Mali 450MP GPU. It has a remarkable 5000Mah battery which packs so much juice it makes the device double as a powerbank for other devices, a fantastic 1080p FHD display protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 3. It also has a 13 mega pixel rear camera with Sony IMX135 lens, a 5 mega pixel front facing camera, 16GB internal memory with an SD card slot that supports up to 32GB.

The device has all standard connectivity options including EDGE, 3G, Wi-Fi and also has all basic sensors with Gyroscope and gravity sensors. The phone weighs a shocking 146 g and measures 8.9 mm which is on par with most other flagship devices. It comes with extras that makes it an unbeatable package value wise. In the package, you find a Flip cover with clock view, a silicone type cover, a screen protector, an OTG usb device, a 16GB Micro SD card, hands-free headset and a charger. All these features and accessories come at a mouth watering price of N49,000!!

So I decided to give the phone a try and I can confirm to you that, I am totally blown away by the performance of this device. I do anything I want at any time. I play games, text, listen to music for hours on end without hitches. This device has produced some outrageous battery stats like none I have ever witnessed. I got about 2days up time with over 7hrs screen on time without plugging in its charger. Though I am not a firm believer in benchmark scores, I put the device through Antutu test and it did remarkably well, scoring between 29,000 and 31,000 on several runs with a custom rom installed.

To cut the long stories short, if you want a device with high end specs, phenomenal battery performance, not minding pretty average looks and are on a budget, look no further. Go for this device!

Get rid of your frustrating Android battery drain issues!

Is  your Android device driving you crazy by running out of battery every now and then? Do you you have to charge your phone over and over again even though you don't make heavy use of it? Do you feel like you don't even want to launch that awesome HD game because it'll drain your battery? If your answer to these questions is yes, you have come to the right place. I will teach you something that's guaranteed to help conserve that precious battery charge so you can enjoy your phone more and worry less about charging.

Before now, I used to install all kinds of supposed battery saving apps from google play and in my honest opinion, they hardly ever helped the problem. Some even made it worse by running unnecessary background processes. I came across a feature in a custom rom called wake lock blocker. What that app did was to prevent other apps from running unwanted processes that prevent your device from going into deep sleep. The app was very effective and I noticed very considerable battery duration improvements. Before the app, I would lose at least 20% charge if I left my phone idle for about 6hrs. With the app I lost only 1% and that taught me a lot about what causes android battery drain. I couldn't use wake lock blocker as standalone app so I made a few researches and luckily found something close which is what I want to share with you today.

The name of the app is Greenify and it can be downloaded from Google play. It works in a similar manner to wake lock blocker and what it does is interesting. It forces your device to go into deep sleep by hijacking and forcing all those stubborn android apps that run background processes that drink up your battery juice. I have used greenify for quite a while and I tell you it works magic. Its all you need to get rid of that annoying continuous discharging and charging issue. Now I'll teach you how to set it up on your device and maximize its functionality.
First head to google playstore and download and install the app
Now you need to Identify  the notorious apps that cause you battery drain. You can figure this out by downloading wake lock detector and using it to identify the apps that create wakelocks on your phone. To spare you that trouble, you can refer to the list below for such apps.

1 Facebook app
2 bbm
3 Badoo
4 Whatsapp
5 Gmail
6 E-Mail
Now launch the grenify app and set it up.
7 Chrome
8 Google search
9 Google+
10 Weather apps & Widgets
11 Antivirus and Security apps
12 System and device cleaning apps

Now launch the app and select the + button on the bottom right corner of the screen. Highlight all these apps I have mentioned as well as any other apps you feel might be leeching on your battery and touch that same button which is now zzz, then enable auto hibernation and you're all set. I must mention that the application works best in root mode with xposed framework installed. Please refer to my earlier blog post for instructions on how to install and set-up xposed framework. The paid version of the app that unlocks experimental features will ensure that you are rid of your battery issues permanently. The app costs $2.99 and its easily worth twice that IMO. What are you waiting for? Go for it!

Turn your Android device to a Hi-Fidelity, Audiophile grade audio player with Vipers Audio viper4android app. (Root Only)

Before now, I was on an endless search for applications that I could use on my android device to have better audio quality. I downloaded all sorts of ridiculous volume enhancing and equalizer apps from google playstore but they just didn't cut it. Yes you might feel that the sound quality of your average smartphone is satisfactory or in fact amazing but, believe me when I tell you, except for a few that will cost a fortune, its garbage. I own a host of Hi-Fidelity headphones like the Audio Technica ATH M50 and the Sony MDR XB500 to mention a few, its just frustrating having to always pair them with my PC or a Hi-Fi system to get the best out of them. Having rooted my phone, I started to play around with Root apps and follow tips to modifying my device down to the system level. By some luck, I stumbled upon the xda thread of ViPER's Audio and my search ended.

ViPER’s Audio is an audio enhancing software to provide everyone with better audio experiences in various platforms such as smartphones and PCs founded by Euphy Wong (known as ViPER520). I regard the app as God sent for Audiophiles and music enthusiasts who want to enjoy high quality, rich music while on-the-go.
If you have a rooted device with supersu installed and would like to have the viper4android app on your device, follow the simple steps below.

Step 1: Download the latest Viper4android 2.3.3.0 APK file

Step 2: Go to google playstore and download any Root browser if you haven't already. ES file explorer is good but I use Rom Toolbox. So install rom toolbox and launch the application.

Step 3: From the Tools tab menu, click Root Browser. Find the downloaded apk file in SDCard/Download folder. The downloaded file might be in .rar format so you would need to extract it.

Step 4: Now copy Viper4Android_FX_A4.x.apk (If your phone runs on KitKat 4.4.x or  Viper4Android_FX_A2.3.apk if your phone runs on Android 2.3, click the Up button twice to go back to the root of your device, locate the System folder and click to enter. Click the App folder on the top of the folders list and paste the copied file in there. Scroll to the bottom to locate the pasted file 'Viper4Android_FX_A4.x.apk', touch and hold it till a pop-up appears, click permissions from the pop-up and set your permissions to RW--R-R-- and click ok. Now exit Rom Toolbox and do a reboot.

Step 5: When your device reboots, the Viper4Android FX app should appear in your app drawer. Click it to launch and install the audio driver, select Medium quality while at it for best balance of audio quality and power saving. After this, enable the app by ticking the enable check box and go through the UI to personalize and configure your music settings.

Step 6: Go to Audio Profiles settings on your phone and set Viper4Android FX as your default sound app. Plug in your headphones, play your music and watch the magic happen.

Get the fresh Android Lollipop 5.0 look on any android device!

Google recently Launched a new Android OS codenamed Android 'L', later revealed to be Lollipop 5.0. The OS is a full redesign of the Android interface and 'my oh my' it is pretty. Google's iteration of Android before 5.0 Lollipop was KitKat 4.4x which is the one most Android devices that came out between late 2013 and 2014 run on. Android 5.0 updates are rolling out to a lot of devices already, especially the Google Nexus lines comprising of the Nexus 4, 5, and 7 as well as a host of Motorola devices. Some high end devices from makers like Samsung, LG and HTC already run on Lollipop 5.0 or will have their updates in January 2015, but those devices cost 'an arm and a leg'. A whole lot of Android devices out there don't even have any sort of Lollipop update plan or schedule, let alone release date for the update. The sad truth is that a whole lot of devices wont even be updated officially which means no beautiful Lollipop 5.0 OS for them ever, except if our good friends over at xdadevelopers.com save the day with custom iterations which might take a while due to source code issues.
I personally fall into the category of the 'hopeful for future Android 5.0 updates' as I recently decided to stick with a MEDIATEK octa-core device as my daily driver. I am not big on theming my devices as I like the pure minimalist look for my devices but! I garra get me some Lollipop look on my phone jor. If you are like me and cant wait for Lollipop update to arrive for your phone, or you don't even know if your device will get it, all hope is not lost. You can still have the Android L feel with a few steps and apps which I will take you through right away.

Things you need:

  • Your phone
  • Data subscription
  • Small tiny brain
  • A chilled can of Orijin. He..He..He.
Okay! First you need to go to the Google Playstore app on your phone, Search for and install Nova Launcher. There's a free version which will work for this purpose but honestly, the app is so awesome I feel you should purchase Prime. Then you need to search for and install Moonshine-Icon Pack.

After installing both apps, you need to configure Nova by launching Nova settings from your app drawer or your home-screen. In the desktop settings menu, leave most options as default but select persistent search bar. In the Drawer menu, check the show pages as cards box, select your background transparency as you would like it, select Circle Transition Animations and you can go through the other options too and set as desired. In the look and feel menu, choose your preferred colour theme, select Moonshine as icon theme, change icon size to at least 115% and set other options as desired. Set up your OK Google hot-word detection and you're done with Nova.

Now launch the Moonshine app from your app drawer and select 'Apply Theme', Select Nova in the pop up options and click cancel. Next select wallpapers, scroll through the collection of material design wallpapers and make a choice. Highlight your choice and click set wallpaper. Now go to your home screen and set it up by adding your app icons to your dock, creating and organizing folders and generally customizing to your taste.
Head to the Playstore again and update all your Google apps to the latest versions if you haven't already done so. i.e Maps, Gmail, Messenger, Drive, G+ e.t.c. They have all been updated to have that fresh Lollipop design look with stock flat icons.
Now enjoy your new Android Lollipop 5.0 look.

If you have root, you can install xposed framework and Gravity Box to tweak your device down to system level and gain more of the Lollipop look and functionality.
You can also install a Lollipop Lockscreen app to get that gorgeous Lollipop Lock-screen.

N4,000 Monster! portable Sound-Station Bluetooth Speaker By RLG (Review)

Interest in portable audio is increasingly on a high. I personally have been a victim of the hype of portable sound stations (Speakers) for quite a while now. Its been haunting my dreams and has been top of my 'to buy' items. These things are quite difficult to find and even when found come with hefty price tags. Being an avid music lover, I've always wanted one but I just couldn't justify paying such huge sum for a speaker so tiny. For example, the Bose sound link costs $129, Beats Pill $179. Seriously? 'For dis Hot weather'? If like me, you want a portable Bluetooth speaker but don't have hundreds of dollars, read on. Today is your lucky day.

By some good fortune, I stumbled upon a product by RLG Nigeria in a Gloworld retail outlet, a shiny, tiny looking portable Bluetooth speaker with call answering functions and FM. After a thorough examination, I asked to test it and I was obliged. On testing, it sounded very average, nothing spectacular. I asked how much it cost and I was told I could pick it up at N4,000. 'Not bad' I thought. Besides, I've wanted to own one for quite a while so I paid for it. I rushed home to go play with my new toy, hooked it up to my phone and streamed my Spotify playlist to it. I listened with some detachment for a while and it played for about 4hours. 'Meh'. It wasn't as exciting as I hoped it'll be. I used it a couple more times and as time went on, the sound consistently got better. As I tell you this right now, my RLG BT speaker has grown into a MONSTER! The kick in the bass is amazing, the clarity of the audio is outstanding and the volume is simply unbelievable. This thing blows my Laptop speakers out of the water, yet so tiny. The RLG speaker has become my go to music companion getting more use time than my beloved Audio Technica ATH M50 headphones.
I cant say how the RLG stacks up against names like Bose, Beats and Co. performance wise, but price wise? Its a 'no brainer'. If you want a portable Bluetooth speaker that will give you awesome, unbelievable sound, answer calls, access FM stations, don't hesitate. Rush to the nearest Gloworld shop to you and pick it up at a jaw dropping bargain of N4,000 only. Its an amazing offer considering the fact that it goes for N6,000 at other retail outlets. Technical specifications of the speaker and features are as follows:

A lot of people want new laptops but just cant figure out the choice to make that'll represent a great deal with regards to price and specs. If you are one of those people, you are in luck so read on.
In this economy of ours where the currency keeps plummeting daily against our beloved US dollar, its not easy to fork out plenty naira to buy gadgets any more. Besides, you wouldn't want to pay huge sums of money to buy a crappy Laptop that's already dated, and is destined to make you feel 'like a flintstone' (pre-historic) in a few months. That's why I bring to you today, a purchasing guide comprising three MS Windows Laptop PCs, which represent the best value for money across three form factors and are available now.  Be it for entertainment, work or just an upgrade to catch up with the present, big small or medium sized, you're sure to find one that's very well up to date and wont burn a hole in your pockets.

11 Inch display: ASUS Vivobook F200LA-CT013H
For those who want a small, Net-Book like form factor, this one's for you. This beauty has an 11.6 inch Display, a 4th Gen  Intel Core i3 Processor clocked at 1.7GHZ, 4GB DDR3 Ram, 500GB hard drive space and Intel HD graphics with up to 1792MB  total graphics memory. This configuration means you have a Net-book which performs even better than a lot of full sized laptops that cost a lot more. The only downside to this PC is that it does not have a DVD drive. You would have to get an external drive if you require one. Thats a well known shortcoming of Laptops with Net-Book form factor. If you like Nt-Books, you cant go wrong with this. Get this amazing Laptop on konga.com for N78,500.

14 Inch Display: LENOVO IDEAPAD B490
The Lenovo B490 is also a full sized Laptop a 14 inch display. It It comes with a 3rd Gen Intel Core i3-3110m processor, 4GB DDR3 Ram, 500GB HDD and a 3rd Gen Intel Graphics HD video card. The Acer EX2510 is a full sized Laptop with a display which measures at 15.6 inches. Its specs is pretty similar to that of the Asus Vivobook above. Unbrick any Hard Bricked Mediatek Device MTK MT65xx. e.g Gionee, TECNO, Doogee, THL, Innjoo, INFINIX, etc.

I want a share a method of unbricking your Mediatek (MTK) device.

Things you need:
Your bricked phone
A usb cable
A PC with internet connectivity
A brain
Some Patience

Step 1: Search for and download the factory rom for your phone from http://www.needrom.com or the support/download section of your phone manufacturers website. Download SP_Flash_Tool_v5.1343.01 along with MTK device drivers for your PC.

Step 2: Create a folder, unzip your downloaded rom into the folder, unzip SP flashtool in same folder and install your MTK device drivers. After install, connect your phone to your PC via usb and it should come up as MTK usb VComm port device. If your PC does not recognize the device, unplug it, hold your Vol+ button and reconnect it. If that works, we're good to go. Disconnect the device from your PC and take out its battery.

Step 3: Now launch the SP Flash tool .exe from the unzipped SP Flashtool folder. Click the scatter-loading button and select the scatter file from your unzipped factory rom folder, click the download agent button and select MTK_AllInOne_DA.bin from your unzipped sp flash tools folder, click the drop down button beneath the scatter-loading window and select firmware upgrade, check all the boxes on the left pane and press download.

Step 4: Connect your device to your PC, wait 5 seconds and insert your battery. Sp flash tool should commence flashing your factory rom to your phone and you'll get a flash success message on your PC screen after a few minutes. Now disconnect your phone from your PC and give it a few minutes to boot up and wake up from its slumber.

Congratulations! You're done.

If this guide didn't hep you, you can refer to this youtube post to see detailed steps in an explanatory video.

As always, feedbacks, comments and questions will be appreciated.

Infinix Zero x506 8gb vs Infinix HOT. Review and Opinion

Infinix Mobility has undeniably taken Nigeria by storm in recent months with their new android smartphone offerings. There have been a number of interesting offerings but the two most interesting ones are the X506 which comes in two variants (8gb and 16gb) and the all new sizzling hot HOT! Pun intended, sorry I couldn't resist that.
I am going to make a comparison between both devices and try to narrow down on their pros and cons, to help you make a decision on which represents the 'best bang for your buck' this xmas season.

The X506 8gb as it implies comes with 8gb internal flash memory with support for expandable storage of up to 32gb via micro-sd cards. It has an MTK MT6592  Octa-Core processor chip clocked at 1.4ghz, paired with a Mali 450MP GPU and 1gb Ram. The x506 comes with a stunning 5'' IPS 720p HD display with 1280x720 pixel resolution, a 13mp rear camera with sony exmor lens and a 2mp front facing camera. It is a quad band dual sim device with EDGE, 3G and HSDPA. The device comes packed with proximity, gyro and light sensors, a led indicator for notifications, standard connectivity options including bluetooth 4.0, micro usb 2.0 and wifi but lacks infrared blaster, 4g LTE or NFC. The X506 comes with a 1920MAH battery to ensure that sleek slim design. Noting its sleekness, it comes clad in corning gorilla glass 3 which is awesome, and runs on Android KitKat 4.4.2 which is uber awesome.
The device goes for N20,900 on Konga and this version comes in either black or white. A gold colour is available for its 16gb iteration.

On a flip side, the Infinix Hot comes with 16gb internal flash memory without support for expandable storage. It has an MTK MT6582 quad-core chipset clocked at 1.3ghz, paired with a Mali 400MP GPU and 1gb Ram. The Hot comes with a 5'' FWVGA display with 480x854 pixel resolution , a 5mp rear camera and a 2mp front facing camera. Its also a quad band dual sim device with EDGE, 3G and HSDPA. The device also comes packed with proximity, gyro and light sensors, standard connectivity options including bluetooth 4.0, micro usb 2.0 and wifi but lacks infrared blaster, 4g LTE or NFC. Interestingly, the Hot comes with a 2000MAH battery, in 5 sizzling hot colours of plastic and costs N12,900.

Now heres my opinion.
If you are new to the Android device world and want to own one for the first time, and want a very budget friendly one, the Infinix Hot is not a bad choice. Its super affordable, runs on android 4.4.2, has a host of connectivity options, a decent low end chipset configuration and a 2000MAH battery. This device will certainly hold more juices than the x506 as its battery capacity is more by 80MAH and it powers a considerably weaker screen and less power demanding Processor.
The deficiencies of this device against the x506 8gb in my opinion are a cheaper screen, cheap looking plastic body in girly shouting colours, a less powerful processor and a lower performing camera. But it costs N12,900, so you basically get what you pay for. Nothing more, nothing less.

Now, if you are willing to pay N8,000 more, you get a crystal clear HD display which is worlds apart from the Hot, a more powerful, graphics intensive processor capable of handling HD games, a nicer sleeker chassis with scratch resistant corning gorilla glass 3, a 13mp rear camera that obliterates that of the Hot and only one downside. Your 1920MAH battery that constantly dies on you.

Whatever choice you make, you will have loads of Kitkat fun and probably Lollipop fun too in the not too far future via custom roms.

Don't forget to leave your questions, comments and feedback. Hope you enjoyed reading.
